Critter Challenge 1: Hissing Cockroach

A cockroach dissection was what turned me off the life sciences several years ago (that, and the endless memorisation. It’s overhyped anyway). Still, handling paper ones is just about manageable.

Here’s a design for the first critter challenge: a hissing cockroach. The distinctive features for this bug would be the segmented body, in addition to all the usual cockroach bits (long antennae, legs). Packing all of these requires a 40×40 grid:

And it’s still lacking some essential cockroachness. Maybe ‘cos the ones I’m using to seeing around here tend to be poisoned, electrocuted, and flattened.

Awesome! I also designed a much simpler hisser. The legs are a bit odd on yours, though. However, my model really doesn’t have any legs, so I probably shouldn’t be talking :X

Yep. Like I said, the only reference sample I had was rather mangled when I finally pinned it down.

Ah! I could provide you with reference pics if you need them :)

Thanks; I used quite a few reference pics, but somehow I just can’t do bugs unless I physically handle them. :)
