Cthulhu
I’d selected a sheet of lokta, about 45gsm, for this model, mulberry would be too soft to fold with. After the initial precreasing and collapsing of the base, here’s how things stand:

The tedious part now follows – filling in all the details.

Now to narrow all the tentacles and poof out the head.

Some thoughts on it:
The mix of short and long tentacles didn’t turn out too bad after all, and the extra layers seem to enhance the number of tentacles all around. The toes could do with some more work, as could the wings. A neck river might have helped separate the wings further from the head region, but that’s no biggie, with a bit of mushing, it can be hidden.

You are a god!
Or should I say, “You are an Elder God!”
Very cool. I especially love the mix of long + short tentacles.

Did making that require an incredible amount of skill? Because that I what someone said to me, they said “That would require an incredible amount of skill”, those exact words. So that is why I was wondering if really would take an incredible amount of skill or whether it wasn’t actually that difficult. I mean, I can’t even make a paper crane but how hard was it to make that?

Thanks for the comments everyone!
@Lara #1: Well, yes, it takes some skill, but it’s really just a skill acquired through a lot of practice (I’ve been at this for a few years), rather than something innate. The total amount of time it took, starting from designing it on paper, to finally photographing the finished model, was really only about 4-5 hours.
@Lara #2: Wikipedia will have the answer.
@m: I got introduced to HP Lovecraft through Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game. To my shame, I’d have to say I’ve never really read the original Lovecraft story thoroughly (I skimmed through it, that was about all).

Dear Wolf,
Thank you for your reply to my enquiry.
Don’t worry about not having read Lovecraft’s Call of Cthulhu – I think it is a bit long and boring compared to some of his other stories. The roleplaying game is certainly excellent fun, though – not too many boring game mechanics, just crushing dread and powerlessness in the face of cosmic evil.
I thought you might also enjoy this site: http://www.nyder.com/cthulhu/cthulhucreates.html
I think your creation is definitely worthy of inclusion there.
Cordially,
The First Lara (but not the second)

Sometimes I think the most merciful thing in the world is the inability of human fingers to call into being the greatest of the Great Old Ones. We live in an origami-versions-of-Elder-Gods-free world, and it is not meant that we should fold.
This is teh ossum!

I bow in gratitude. I never thought memorizing the opening lines of Call of Cthulhu would come in handy, but it does. BTW, excellent for freaking people out at sound checks.

Ha, that’s cool. I’ve also seen some cool star wars origami somewhere online. It will probably come up in a search. I’m pretty experienced in origami but I’ve never done one of those. Maybe you can make one that is eating some smaller creature or something. Good job!
December 13th, 2007 at 5:49 am
Yes, there’s quite a bit of SW origami around.
A facehugger on a human might be kind of cool.
